ABOUT US

The Origin of the Shaka

The "shaka" gesture is widely recognized as a symbol of aloha and laid-back Hawaiian spirit. Legend says it originates back to Hamana Kalili, a Hawaiian plantation worker of the early 1900s who lost his middle fingers while working at the Kahuku sugar mill on Oahu. Despite this, Hamana would wave to children and passing drivers using his thumb and pinky, inspiring the shaka gesture. Today, the shaka embodies the essence of hospitality and friendliness in Hawaii, making it a symbol that welcomes visitors and locals alike.
